EMOTIONAL CARTOGRAPHIES

The drawings in this body of work are inspired by newspapers from the 1880’s, both in terms of their journalistic sensationalism and illustrative style. Hyperbolic verbal phrases —“bending over backwards,” “at the end of my rope,” “burning bridges”— become visual metaphors. Homespun, low tech processes such as quill pens and frisket, hand-carved rubber stamps, and homemade feather pens mimic the graphic qualities of historic engravings and maps. These drawings tie the failings and divisions of our current political situation to a complex history of revisionism and erasure.
